From: Davoud on 19 May 2010 19:45 24" iMac, latest OS, all updates, several external FW drives. Out of the blue (it's been working fine for years) the machine will not boot if an external FW drive is turned on. _Any_ external FW drive. If I turn on any of the drives after booting the drive will mount. I have run Disk Utility on each of the FW drives, I have restarted in FW target disk mode and run DU on the host iMac, and all is reported well. I seem to recall having had this problem with another Mac and another external FW drive some years back--but I can't find anything relevant in the Google archives. TIA! I suspect if I boot in verbose mode, or bother to look at the system log after boot, I'll se some indication of I/O or Firewire error condition. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. Other brands of HD worked fine and my other Macs booted fine with the S2 attached. Went through all the usual trouble shoots and fixes-- no joy. Eventual solution was to switch to another brand and use the S2 as an extra temp storage drive.

Since I have been using this brand (OWC), and, indeed, these very drives, for some time now, I don't think it's an issue with the brand. In initial troubleshooting I made the error of trying various drives singly and in groups with others turned off, but not disconnected. I have found that four of the five external drives behave nominally if one--a terabyte RAID--is disconnected entirely. In other words, I believe that I have found the perp. If I dismount and unplug the other drives and then plug in the suspect drive it will mount. But there is a logical (not hardware, I think) defect in the drive. A reformat will fix it--or not, in which case I'll toss it. Makes me glad that I maintain multiple back-up drives! It just so happens to be a OWC Mercury On-The-Go enclosure. It's my Time Machine backup drive for my work laptop. Like you, I suspected the cause is due to a logical fault rather than a hardware fault. The problem has since vanished, though. It seems something has changed, because I can no longer reproduce it. : / -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
