There's more work involved? I'm not completely convinced by that
argument either, but it is well worth reading Charlie's Stross's essays
on publishing at
<http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2010/04/common-misconceptions-about-pu-1.html>
to understand how completely *weird* the publishing industry is.

The essays are about book publishing rather than magazine publishing,
but perhaps the industries are similar enough...
