Yes, but it's anti-spyware/anti-adware software, i.e. not a firewall
and not anti-virus software. I.e Windows Defender is like
SpywareBlaster, Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, etc..

I run it without problems on several machines, but since it never
found anything, I can't say whether or not it works (well).

Realised it wasn't a firewall. Its sort of build in with W7 - I turned
it off because when I had it up on an XP machine seemed to slow down
file transfers and conflict with my other Virus checkers. Is wanted a
stand alone position.

I wonder if MS intended it that way?

I use it (Windows Defender) with the avast! anti-virus software on XP
and Vista and that combination gives no conflicts.
