From: Burkhard on
On my PC with 7.0-RELEASE I often get the error message

acd0: TIMEOUT - READ BIG retrying (1 retry left)
acd0: TIMEOUT - READ BIG retrying (0 retries left)
acd0: FAILURE - READ BIG timed out

This happens both when reading from a CD or burning a CD.
I thought that the drive was broken and replaced it, but it didn't help.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Burkhard

Your posting is amazingly void of any useful information.
Maybe you should tell a bit more about your hardware.

> Any ideas?

Not with the overwhelming amount of information you provided
so far.

OK. Trying to be a bit more precise. The computer is a Shuttle SG33G5
barebone with Intel G33 Chipset, Intel E8400 CPU, and 4GB RAM. The
CD/DVD ROM is a PATA device, the disc is SATA. The problem exists both
with my custom kernel and GENERIC. This is what dmesg says:

What about sysctl hw.ata.atapi_dma?
I assume it's set to "1". If that's the case, try setting it to "0".

If it helps, you may either just leave it like that or replace the
cable by a known good one and try again setting it to "1".

Thank you. hw.ata.atapi_dma="0" helped. Replacing the cable did not.
