From: VanguardLH on 12 Oct 2009 15:09 Been awhile since I used OE on a regular basis so the following is from my recollection of OE's behavior. If you change the security setting after you received an e-mail for which its attachment was previously blocked, the change in setting does not then unblock that attachment. Once blocked it stays blocked. The status of the e-mail doesn't change because of a security setting that was changed after storing the e-mail. Changing the security setting affects e-mails that are received AFTER that change. After disabling the security setting (a rather foolish move), you'll need your friend to resend their e-mail so the attachment in that new e-mail is accessible. So rather than expose yourself to malicious e-mails that contain executable attachments, why not just educate your friend on either renaming the extension for the file, like from .exe to .exx, whereupon you can save the attachment and then rename the extension back to .exe? Or have your friend put the file inside a .zip file even if there is little or no compression? Homer wrote: > Thanks for the quick response. My7 machine is running XP SP3. From: Homer on 12 Oct 2009 15:15 I'm not using a firewall as far as I know. I use Norton Internet Security. I went through all of those settings and I don't notice anything that would do that. I have email scanning turned off. I'll check there again. This problem doesn't happen on my other two machines that are also running Norton. The machine that I'm having the problem on is my newest. I don't have this problem on all attachments. This is only happened a couple of times and it was email from know sources. My ISB is ATT Yahoo. I'll see if they have some settings on their site. I really never go there since I use OE to retrieve and send mail. "D. From: Richard on 22 Oct 2009 22:46 Hi Homer, You need to check Windows Security Center firewall settings: Click Start, click Run, type or paste next line and press Enter: %SystemRoot%\system32\wscui.cpl You should never connect to the internet without a firewall. You say you are using a "newly aquired laptop". If that means used, but new to you, did you erase the hard drive and freshly install the operating system and all that that involves? There may be all sorts of custom and policy settings that you are unaware of. In Outlook Express, click Tools, click Options, click Security (tab). Is "Restricted sites zone" selected? Is "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" checkmarked? Is "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" checkmarked? In Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Options, click Security (tab). Click Restricted sites icon. Check your settings. Use highest security. HTH. (Hope This Helps. :) --Richard - - - > "Homer" <Homer(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:B41539D1-7E26-4D3F-B3AD-2437E6D3E7BC(a)microsoft.com... > I'm not using a firewall as far as I know.
