From: Owen Holm on 10 Dec 2009 05:02 Is there a free program to find the product key on a CD that you have lost, I have lost the key for my winXP I had on my old computer when it died I have now win7 on my new one, and have rebuilt the old computer and went to install my old XP and can't find the book that had the sticker on it so need to find the product key to install, the old hard drive is not working so can't access it to try the programs that are available to find the keys on your hard drive. Thanks in Advanced oldfart

There is no key stored on the CD, the key is stored in the XP registry. When the harddisk is "dead" you can't retrieve it. Hint: Write down the activation key on the CD, using a CD-marker (don't know the exact term in english). This way you always have the key at hand when you need it. For all who have lost the key but still have access to the XP system: use, for example, Belarc Advisor from www.belarc.com to get a software inventory including keys/serial numbers. Regards Andreas

You need to retrieve the key from the computer. Installation CD's are mass produced and do not have individually numbered licenses. The key is found on a sticker in the packaging, or affixed to the computer itself. If you have a brand name computer and a Windows XP installation CD bearing the same brand name, you may be able to reinstall without using a key; have your computer boot the installation CD.
