No. Foldermarker, Folderstyle and Rainbow folders all place two
invisible files in the folder you want to color or change icon for, an
ini file and an ico file. The system reads these files and shows you
the icon you want, and a help text, a tooltext, if you hover over it,
if you have created such a text for the new icon.

There is no extra dll file involved, the programs are closed after use
and nothing is left running in the system.

Bearbottoms advice, Foldermarker, is the best freeware solution.
Folderstyle is very similar but is nagware. (You can take icons from
its icon folder, though, even if you do not want to use the program.)

Rainbow folders works well in win98. It works in win 2000 too, but you
have to delete the file shelliconcache in the winnt folder so the
system rebuilds the icon cache when you reboot, to see the change. So
I don't recommend this program, it is too old. The other two programs
are probably inserting the new folder icon in the shelliconcache file
directly so you do not need to delete and rebuild it.

I have not tried this on XP, I use win 2000 pro sp 4, but the help
files for the programs say that they work in XP too.

ICOLORFOLDER needs the installation of something similar to the .NET
environment, but it is another addon system, so I have not tried it.
There is no need for it as the advice from Bearbottoms is working very
well, and Folderstyle can be used as a complement if you want more
icons to choose from.
