My best tip would be to toss digikam altogether, buy a card reader,
and learn to use gimp. Totally eliminates all that other nonsense.

Card readers are dirt cheap and most read more than one type of card.
Another bonus is, better card readers allow you to write to a card.
You can now store/carry/xfer data on your camera card just like a
flash drive. Make sure you get a card reader that specifies it will
write to a card. Not all do. I got a perfectly good four card
reader/writer for just $13 at Wallyworld. Best money I ever spent!

I don't think you fully realize the database function of digiKam.

I use a file manager to read my cameras which are mounted as block
devices, and I use USB. Much quicker than fiddling with card removal and
reinsertion, the added expense of a card reader, and the wear and tear
on the camera's contacts for the card slot.

I use the GIMP when I need to modify images, but those from cameras that
are stored in the digiKam's database are not modified.

Neither of these uses have anything to do with the digiKam program.

So far I've never found a better image database program than digiKam.

Your use is obviously for something different.

can I use a card reader in my laptop or do I have to buy a card reader?
or, maybe, just saying, I can conect the camera with usb cable, mount it
as a extarnal drive and copy the images?

again, I don't need a card reader, but it would be nice if I can get
digikam to work. Also, not for editing photos, so I don't even need gimp
as a supstitute, but just for viewing them. I know I can use geeqie, or
even konqueror, but let say that I would realy like to get digikam
running.
