In fact, a bug (wishlist) has already been reported:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=312669

But after more than 4 years, it is still open. The ifconfig command
is said to be deprecated in favour of iproute (which now seems to
be called "ip"), which is in /bin.
