I installed Solaris 10 3/2005 on a Sun Netra T1 (I had reasons for
wanting to do this with the first release of Solaris 10).

I did not allocate all the disk space, thinking I'd leave some left so
I could create a zfs pool. (I'd forgotten that ZFS was not intreduced
until more recently. So I thought I'd modify the partition table. I

1) Booted into single user mode with a CD-ROM
2)
# format
3) Select disk and print partion information.

partition> print
Volume: foobar
Current partition table (original):
Total disk cylinders available: 65533 + 2 (reserved cylinders)

Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
0 root wm 958 - 10309 19.53GB (9352/0/0)
40961760
1 swap wu 0 - 957 2.00GB (958/0/0)
4196040
2 backup wm 0 - 65532 136.87GB (65533/0/0)
287034540
3 unassigned wm 0 0
(0/0/0) 0
4 unassigned wm 0 0
(0/0/0) 0
5 unassigned wm 0 0
(0/0/0) 0
6 unassigned wm 0 0
(0/0/0) 0
7 unassigned wm 0 0
(0/0/0) 0

Now when I try to modify this, it tells me Non-contiguous is non-
contiguous and partion 1 is overlapping. To my eyes, the oboves shows
neither.

Select partitioning base:
0. Current partition table (original)
1. All Free Hog
Choose base (enter number) [0]?
Warning: Non-contiguous partition (0) in table.
Warning: Overlapping partition (1) in table.
Warning: Fix, or select a different partition table.
partition>

I wish to add a couple of more slices, to put file systems on. Any
idea how I can do it?

I should have stated, I booted from the CD into single-user mode, so there were
no mounted partitions.

I don't see a problem with the disk layout either, but here's a way
you can modify it:

Boot into your Solaris 3/05 install and dump the vtoc of the disk to a
file:
# prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/cXtXdXs2 > tmpfile

Modify the disk slices as desired in tmpfile using any text editor -
careful not to modify currently used slices - then apply the tmpfile
to the disk:
# fmthard -s tmpfile /dev/rdsk/cXtXdXs2

Don't know what might be causing that error, but you can try editing
each slice separately, with "0", "1", "2" etc instead of using "modify".
Just be careful when defining the start/end cylinders, etc.

I'm never sure how one can save that though. Sure one can do it, then
hit 'save' where I think something gets saved to format.dat. But when
you run format again, all changes have gone.
