List,

I have a task to junpstart an old 1280 to Solaris 10. I'm a newbie to
jumpstart. Someone sort of chuckled and said that the 1280 would be a
challenge to jumpstart. I assume this is because the console access
may not be as simple as current Sun models. Can anyone give me any
insights as to what I should expect?

A quick Google tells me that there are at least two Sun products bearing
the number 1280. One is a "Sunfire" and the other a "Netra". Do you
know which one you have?

The "Advanced Installation" manual should tell you *most* of what you
need to know about jumpstarting.

Basically, you configure your jumpstart server and then do a
"boot net - -install" on the client.

Check the Sun documentation <docs.sun.com> for a machine readable copy
of the manual. You can order hardcopy docs if you need them. You might
also try google "jumpstart site:sun.com"

AFAIK you can mess up and have to do it over again but can't break anything.

It's probably a good idea to write down your procedure, step by step,
and then follow that procedure. If you have problems you should be able
to tell us exactly what you did and what happened as a result.

Thanks for your very well written reply.

The server is a Sunfire 1280.

I don't anticipate problems with the jumpstart itself. We have someone
here who maintains our jumpstart environment. My concern is that he
pointed out that the Sunfire 1280 is ticky to jumpstart. He didn't
elaborate. I assume he means that stuff like console access isn't so
good for this server. I'm hoping to jumpstart this server remotely
since the server is in another building.

Any suggestions on what might be involved specificatly with this type
of older server would be appreciated.

it's been a while since i've done a sunfire v1280 but i can't recall
anything out of the ordinary with jumpstart.

The only thing I'd add to Richard's great advice is that a rebuild is
usually a great time to make sure the firmware is up to date as well.

is there a 2nd - on the install? i thought it was 'boot net -
install' or
'boot net:dhcp - install' but again it's been a while...

Well, he should, I have JumpStarted shed loads of 1280s over the years.

As long as you have console access, you are away.

You have serial and LOM

They are not *that* old :-)

There is nothing that jumps to mind that would cause an issue.
