Are there some freeware Norton Commander-like utilities I could try?

Thanks,

Alan

If we're talking about NC/DOS, the best (IMHO) one is Shareware and,
unfortunately, Abandonware. But you can take part in the "ongoing"
non-restricted beta-test of the new version. "Current" version
(since June 2000) :-( is 4.99.08a and can be gotten selecting
a link from this page:

http://vvv.kiev.ua

Best to follow <Official German/English Homepage>, because that site
lists some useful add-ons/utilities, too. The missing features of the
above mentioned version are not critical. Most can easily be overcome
using third-party utilities.

If you don't like to take part on a free test for abandoned Shareware,
I suggest you to have a look at Necromancer's Dos Navigator:

http://ndn.muxe.com

You need the DPMI32 version for DOS. The project has become open
source shortly before the new Millennium and is still in development.

Another somewhat abandoned one distributed as open-source Registerware
is the Star Commander:

http://sta.c64.org/sc.html

Its strength's lie with handling of C64 images. (If that's what you're
looking for...)

Thank you for that great list of things to try, jmatt, and thanks to
everyone else who provided suggestions as well.

While I was testing, I discovered that the saved passwords file in Firefox
2.0.0.1 and Seamonkey 1.1 under Windows XP, rather than having a name, as
it does under eComStation and did in Win98SE, of eight numerals (which I
presume were different on every computer, as well as under different OSes
on the same computer) and an extension of a single letter, has a text name
and extension that appears as if it would be the same name on every XP
computer. I'm far from an expert on program security, but it appears to
me that the former naming scheme would be more secure. Am I off base
here?
