From: Red Fox on 3 Mar 2007 04:08 I have seen quite a few downoad web sites for free TV progs, claiming that there are hundreds of stations available from around the world e.g. http://www.download3k.com/Internet/Browsers/Download-TV.html I am a bit reluctant to download these without some indication that they are safe to use. Anyone have experience of these and can make a recommendation for a very good product? I have a lower speed DSL line. TIA RF

I noticed TV.exe requires a minimum screen res of 1024x768 which counts me out since I'm still using 800x600 which is quite adequate for my normal purposes. TV.exe also requires: Windows Media Player and Real Player, two pieces of dubious bloatware. What you could do is d/l and install TV.exe using something like FREE TotalUninstall from here: http://www.martau.com/index.php, so if you don't like it just uninstall it and then clean your registry. My experience of streaming video/audio is that it's always bloated and either works or doesn't. If the latter, trying to find out what's wrong can be a nightmare game playing with codecs.

It works acceptably well for me for a few channels - like NASA TV and the Research Channel but the vast majority of stations had no output or it was so garbled that it was not worth watching. I'll have to wait for the next generation, if this is typical. Enjoy the weekend :-) RF

Your computer probably already has everything you need to watch these programs, i.e. Media Player, Flash. Typically, these TV programs are nothing more than an interface for Media Player and a database of websites. Lots of times the programs aren't "live". That is the content isn't being broadcast in real-time -- it's old stuff that simply gets streamed to your computer on demand. Personally, I never found much interesting content unless you are into much older movies (30 - 40 years old) or news. If your goal is entertainment there are sights like PeekVid that will stream current movies or TV shows to your computer in Flash format. They don't host the files, they just point to them on sites like YouTube, etc. Sometimes the links are broken as the copyrighted content is removed from the original source. M
