John-

This discussion has been very interesting, but seems to have strayed
from your question.

As David suggested, an icon might be hidden behind another icon. It
also might be hiding off screen if you changed monitors or monitor
resolution.

Either way, you should be able to drag it from your Desktop Folder onto
the Desktop, and it should stay where you put it unless you have one of
the Desktop options set otherwise. (Control-Click on desktop and choose
Show View Options.)

Also a big fan of DragThing. Apple dock hidden of the RHS of the
screen, DragThing dock off the LHS gives lots of quick access with
maximized screen real estate. Highly recommend it.

It's also a great quick reference for passwords and such and you can
copy/paste them into the appropriate blanks on web pages really easily.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and
realize that half of them are stupider than that.

What about aliases on the desktop, do they too take up as much
RAM as other icons of the same size? I expect yes, but just
asking.

Fred Thanks for getting back on track. I have never had anything like
this happen before and my first mac was an SE. If I played with the Show
View Options I could get two or three of the five Icons in my desktop
folder in view on the desktop by changing the Icon Size and Grid
Spacing. I think it was a corrupt preference but could not figure it
out. I finally fixed the problem by creating a new user account and
replacing all my documents, pictures etc from my old user account then
deleting it. I do have a bootable SuperDuper backup but it runs
automatically each morning so it was corrupted also. Anyway thanks for
the suggestions. John
