I believe the approach is not too bad: Just set to missing whatever shouldn't be included in the analysis. Most analytical SAS procedures allow you to choose whether to include or exclude missings from analysis (you might choose "exclude"). Here what was sent to me: Perhaps you will begin to fall in love with MISSINGS from NOW ON! data need; set have; if event1=1 then event1=.; if event2=1 then event2=.; if event3=1 then event3=.; run; 1 values won´t bother you anymore for your analisys.
