Hey Guys,

would you like to share some of your ideas on this Newsgroup?

portion of the knowledge+)] at

In the course of my short 'history' with this Newsgroup I have learned that, belonging to the majority of the first posters that own the minority of expertise, I need to pay attention to my vocabulary and that many guys appear to be sincerely irritated by top posting, do 4 me my homework requests, unclear problem explanation and fluff in general. I myself personally reply to a minikin number of posts, not because I was not ready to help, but because my programming and maths skills are limited. As a result, my relationship to the Newsgroup, if any, is rather pragmatic, as to the the magic place where I hope to get my troubles closer to being resolved. Obviously, the more comfortable the members are with the posted stuff, the more help can be elicited. With this aim, I've made a couple of thoughts on the Newsgroup that could eventually be enhancing.

========================================
What out of the following would you welcome?

1. When replying to posts, the possibility to choose whether I want to keep the the body of previous message or start the reply with a blank field (e.g. tick blank [x])

2. Separating Matlab news from Simulink news.

3. More detailed classification of Matlab newsgroup topics, e.g.:
3.1 Programming efficiency
3.2 Plotting / Optimization / Toolboxes (whatever)
- ...
3.3 Proposals
3.4 Calls for Votes
3.5 MATLAB Contests

3.6 Mathematical problems not necessary related to Matlab (such as interesting optimization problems, puzzles, maths humor, etc.)

What (other) subtopics do you feel would make sense?

> Re: dpb [That is certainly speaking loosely (not a wise choice for a technical
newsgroup, btw... :) ). You might look at the wikipedia article on usenet as starters.]
4. Introductory info for newcomers to the Newsgroup, in particular, that the site is Usenet based, and a summary of things you can and cannot do (e.g. not edit or delete own posts, no files upload unless special status), etc.

5+6
5. Modifying the "Before you post, remember:" so as
Check if your question is answered in the comp.soft-sys.matlab FAQ.
Getting started? MATLAB Tutorials are available online.
Your message will be read by thousands of MATLAB users worldwide.

6. and adding "Before you submit your post, check out that you":
6.1 Do not top post.
6.2 Write short messages (such as "Thanks and kisses!") and messages without the need for explicit reference to previous posts in a blank field.
6.3 Are as specific as possible. Structure your post as: desired output, what you've tried and why that is no good solution, questions.
6.4 Format neatly. Especially, you may frame your code, as e.g.
%---------------------------------------------
[code]
%---------------------------------------------

In what way would you amend the above points, if you in principle agree with them?
What other points would you add? (Sorry for eventual errors.) HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU :O))

do you survey here...

and let CSSM the results here, for instance (should be prone to any firewall restrictions)...

Already a feature of my newsreader.

> 2. Separating Matlab news from Simulink news.

Not especially important to me. I find that sometimes I can answer Simulink
questions even though I have never used it, if I have seen the answer before,
or if the answer does not really depend upon Simulink (e.g., the recent thread
about TCP and UDP servers.)

Classification? How? In Mathwork's interface you can already Tag posts. Usenet
does offer a Keywords: posting header, but it is not often used. If you mean
splitting into separate discussion areas, it would be difficult for Mathworks
to automatically route the discussion to the right area for messages that
originate outside Mathwork's equipment, unless separate newsgroups were
established. It would not be realistically possible to establish parallel
usenet newsgroups for Proposals, Calls for Votes, or Contests, as those would
be seen as having too low a volume to warrant a newsgroup. It would not be
realistically possible to establish a parallel newsgroup for mathematical
problems, as there are existing newgroups for that purpose, such as
rec.puzzles and sci.math.*

The rest of what you mention is local to Mathworks' interface.

We also detest the cutesy shorthand of the texting generation... :)

It doesn't aid in communication and being difficult to read and
interpret for those who don't do that, I suspect it also leads to folks
skipping over postings that they have trouble deciphering...

Ditto Walter but...one should almost always start by quoting enough
context of the post to which one responds that it's clear what your
remarks are in regards to. Trimming is good, deleting is generally not
so much...

As noted already even the ML/Simulink split isn't a foregone conclusion
as being _a_good_thing_ (tm); certainly the others are as Walter says,
either of so little magnitude as to not be feasible or not the purview
of TMW at all...

....

> What other points would you add? (Sorry for eventual errors.) HOPE TO

Other than TMW could, I suppose do something on the lines you suggest
wrt expanding the FAQ and perhaps do something for newbies on the web
interface (that newbies will ignore, anyway) about searching, posting
etiquette, etc., etc., is ok if they want do do it but I really doubt it
would make a whole lot of difference. People are people and for the
most part they just jump in and ask first, think later. I don't see
that behavior changing no matter what TMW does.

All in all, it seems to me you're trying to find a place to make a
change that really there's not much demand (as in any) for...

$0.01, etc., etc., ..., of course

Sounds like somebody needs to come up with a txt2english conversion tool. I agree with dpb about that. Even when I text on my phone, I use complete spelling, capitalization and punctuation.
