My iPod Touch has a processor in it that's much slower than the 1 GHz Cortex A9 in the iPad, and it ran rings around an XP running 1.66 GHz Atom processor in an Asus Netbook I briefly owned. The iPod Touch is faster at Wi-Fi connections, it was faster receiving and sending E-mail, it launched apps faster, loaded web pages faster, even the on-board calculator was faster! But, if as you say, it runs Android, it might be OK. It's Windows that slows the Atom to a crawl.

Problem is, like most of these things, right now it seems to be a "wish list" rather than a product. When (and if) it ships, I might be interested. I'll have to see how it works in real life. If it performs at least as well as the iPad, looks as good, and is in the same ballpark, weight-wise, I might go for one. It has everything that I would want in a tablet. Of course, it would also have to have the app support I need (like a decent word processor, a decent web-browser, e-mail client, etc.).

Faster even than a Mac Pro!

You can see the full comparison at TechCrunch.com Breathlessly hyped by the "review", under-spec'd in some ways, uselessly (for me) spec'd in others and IMHO Android is not a winner in terms of OS. Straight imbedded GNU/Linux would have been better. There's also no mention of price that I saw nor an availability date. There's a lot of vaporware that's come up against Apple products- and hyped as "the Apple saucer"- only to never see the light of day. But the screen size is somewhat closer to what I am looking for than the current too-small-for-me iPad so that's a plus, although it's odd that it's the same number of pixels wide while only 300 or so pixels longer. About the best that can be said is that clearly the days of the various e-ink based readers like Amazon's and Barnes & Noble's are numbered in low digits. -- Faith is believing what you know ain't so. -Mark Twain

In any case, two paragraphs of negative hype from a "phandroid" is useless. Try something with a little substance: <http://phandroid.com/2010/01/29/android-tablets-vs-apple-ipad-comparisonreview/> Then buy what suits you and play with it instead of hassling anyone else for their choice. -- Wes Groleau Methods meddling by amateurs http://Ideas.Lang-Learn.us/WWW?itemid=889 |
