From: zoara on 22 Jun 2010 07:15 There have been plenty of reviews and impressions of the iPad from people who are technical or gadget-minded. But that doesn't seem to be who the iPad is marketed to; I thought it would be interesting to get a review from the target market, so I got Hannah - who has now had an iPad for a couple of weeks - to email me her thoughts so I can post them here. Han is dyslexic and wrote this on the iPad with its helpful autocorrect, so at times it can be confusing. But I thought it important to get her thoughts direct with no prompting from me - I didn't make any suggestions about what she should talk about other than "things you like about it and things you don't". It also demonstrates how well (or not) the autocorrect copes with poor spelling. ------------- Review of Ipad I must start by saying I don't like new stuff unlike most women I even dislike new clothes - I like old stuff that I'm used to know how they work etc,now this does not stop me wanting new stuff as when my new gadgets clothes have a bit of time behind them I start to love it- I reckon it took me a month to like my Iphone and now well I love it. I also should say I'm the type of gal that likes either a nokia phone or an I phone like simple gadgets I will either have the best or the basics. Ok moving on to the Ipad I have only had for a week so still a little new to me but starting to fall in love I reckon I'm at the curious stage of the relationship - E mail brilliant love it, Facebook a little odd it takes ati e to focus on the screen which I don't like. Iplayer brilliant quality on film and sound however prefer the front page on the laptop- don't know why just easier to use.I don't like I can't get 4 Od - gutted I love come dine with me. womanise hour IeventuLly worked out how to use but not chuffed I can't play Radio live I need to use another application. Carrying it around etc - it would be nice if sit had some kind of handle maybe one built it so I could carry it around more confidently , sometimes I feel it's going to slip out of my hands. Getting used to not standing up its odd noy having a laptop where you type and the screen is already optioned for you although I'm sure this is something I will get used to. Good battery life- love it it last for ages and tells you how much you have left. Photos lush the photo s are amazing quality and it's a joy to look at phoyos this is brilliant so easy to use. notes brilliant I love this I used to use post it notes on Mac before and although this worked sometimes it felt a little messy the notes on Ipad are brilliant easy to use delate etc, oh and the copy and paste thing works well if sending a e mail. Internet like its simple and also like that have lots of pages open easy Scatches onscreen- didn't like the opening oho to as it looks like there is scotches on the screen. Stand we have used a plate stand this has worked well. Size thought would be an issue it's not at all - I thought I would miss the size of my MAcbook but I haven't at all this is big enough for me I have still got myMacbook as I have not sold it yet I have gone back to use it for 4od and I find its really slow. Overall I love the I pad I think its a great gadget for ladies like me and I think of it a bit like a magazine the way it site on my lap the way I pick it up and put it down it's a good size and I look forward to having more applications. It does remind me of a large I phone however with added extras. It's easy to learn the applications and unlike my PC at work it does not feel me with fear to try new applications on it.It's just so simple. I am slowly falling in love......= ------------- A couple of her points might need further context / explanation. Han stuck with an old Nokia with the up/down menu system as the newer ones with the grid menu just felt too fiddly; I think her dyslexia means she finds UI clutter just too much work. The Facebook app is an iPhone app, zoomed up. I've explained why it looks odd, but she doesn't care why, she just says it looks fuzzy. No complaints that the buttons and controls are twice as big as they should be, though. The iPlayer interface on the iPad is different to that on the MacBook (it's the same one as used by the Playstation, apparently). 4OD uses Flash and there seem to be no plans to change this - so at least in this respect Apple is wrong about Flash. I find it interesting that Han finds her MacBook slow compared to her iPad - it's a 1.83Ghz MacBook with a couple of gigs of RAM. She's intending to sell it to finance the iPad (and will have her account migrated to my MacBook Pro; I guess the deal is I can play on the iPad when she borrows my laptop to watch 4OD). It was followed shortly by this P.S. ------------- I would like to be able to play radio whilst doing other bits on the Ipad. ------------- So, yeah. Even the non-techies need multitasking. FWIW, I installed the iPhone app "TuneIn Radio" - if anyone knows how to get live radio to play in the background (like, say, iPlayer does with timeshifted radio) then I'd appreciate it. -z- -- email: nettid1 at fastmail dot fm

Thanks... That's the one I noticed too! Has she tried the website at touch.facebook.com? Now they have fixed it so that you can see the real website too, which is handy as the touch site you can't see comments on pictures -- Woody

I just downloaded an update for TuneIn Radio on my iPhone. It can play in the background with iOS4. So I guess she'll just have to wait until iOS4 is released for the iPad... Tim

Used to use OOTunes but now prefer that because of the backgrounding. I'll post more on the accessibility improvements in iOS4 later on, but one of the nicer things that they managed to do was make VoiceOver lower any audio volume when it's speaking. This was always the case in the iPod app but now it's universal. |
