From: D.M. Procida on 11 Jun 2010 18:12 I dropped into Cardiff's Apple store on the way home from work this afternoon to have a look at the iPads. My immediate thought was: they're smaller than I imagined - I expected them to be about A4 size. They are lovely little devices. I was trying to find a reason for owning one, but I had to admit that I don't really have any good reasons apart from "it would be nice to have one". I can't really think of anything I'd do with it that I wouldn't do better with anything else I have. I don't play games, I watch television on TV, I use the web on my iMac, I keep my photographs in albums and my music on shelves. Still - I can understand why hotcakes sell like iPads though. Daniele

I was thinking like that a couple of weeks ago. Then I played with one and just bought it because I could. -- SteveH

GoodReader is an excellent app for this, as well as iBooks if you've got ePub format books. I'd love to be able to read The Guardian online service, but unfortunately it doesn't yet support the iPad (totally bonkers). It'll come in time. What else? It's a great way to read email and it really is a nice way to surf the web. You'll see the other thread on OS maps - I downloaded the free maps and also bought the 1:50000 RouteBuddy app which covers all of the National Parks. I'm not sure I can justify the 40 for the 1:25000 Lake District series, though I'd like to get it sometime. I have been experimenting with writing using Pages. The virtual keyboard is just not adequate for the job - it's too easy to mis-key and switching between keyboards is a pain. However, using the BT keyboard is fine, and I have been carrying both on the train, which works really well. Watching videos is very nice - also good for train journeys. I've been using my iPad a lot for note-taking in meetings. I have found PaperDesk to be the best of the apps I've tried so far. It lets you mix freehand note-taking with typed text AND will also record audio while you're taking notes. It works really well. I haven't bought the full version, mainly because there is something wrong with the app's entry in the App Store that means you can only download the free "Lite" app. I've also tried Penultimate (which is OK but not exceptional IMO) and WritePad (which has hand-writing recognition, but no sketching mode that I've been able to find). For drawing I've got Drawing Pad which is great fun, Adobe Ideas (which is too quirky for me) and Omnigraffle. The latter is the most expensive app that I've bought for the iPad: I use Omnigraffle on my Macs every single day but the iPad app, while impressive, is just not there yet in terms of capability and usability for me. I find I have to switch to landscape on most web pages. If they filled the bezel they'd be there, I think. > They are lovely little devices. My ebay/amazon visits seem to have gone up, worryingly. I cold find a place for it at work - taking notes, calandar, email, even writing (I find the keyboard good) but I haven't got the front to carry it off. Rob
