It seems like it doesn't but I'm not 100% sure one way or the other.

When the holder is powered up it sees that TomTom app isn't present and
asks whether to download it. After pressing the No button everything
works OK but I've got the feeling that CoPilot is using the iPhone's
GPS. The car kit box says it's "Optimised for TomTom app".

On the plus side the holder's a nice design, there's a charger, the
hands-free works well and the speaker is clear for calls and spoken
directions; but for 100 it'd be good if the GPS chip worked.

An irritation is that the phone won't fit with its iBand in place but
that (and the CoPilot stuff) isn't TomTom's fault.

There's a free app on the store - from TomTom themselves - that stops
this nag dialog.

You can use it with the dock unplugged - means the battery (on the
phone) will run down but at least you get to test whether the dock
improves the sat nav reception without having to buy a cheap dock or
have the phone running on the car seat (which would change the reception
anyway).

I discovered that about an hour ago after finding a slip of paper in the
box. it reads "Important Note: The TomTom car kit does NOT require the
TomTom app to operate" - their capitlisation BTW.

It then gives instrutions to click yes on the nag screen and download
the car kit tool app as you said.

Good idea about unplugging the 12v to compare.
