I have just acquired an iPod. Still not quite sure what I'll
do with it. Meanwhile - this one came Windows-formatted. I've
read a bit aout these gizmos and I can't see where there's any
extra functionality I'd get from making it Mac-formatted. Is
there any point in switching?

You might gain some more disk space. The Windows FAT disk format does
not make efficient use of space.

If you're intending to use it as an external hard disk, (IIRC iTunes
calls this "enable for disk use") then you might want to consider what
sorts of machines you plug it into. Windows boxes won't be able to read
Mac-formatted iPods. Macs can read either-formatted iPods.

Only if you want to use it as an external disk as well

Some of the latter iPods come formated in FAT32 and should not be change.

It would be best to check first.
