backup from OS-X v10.5 on external backup drive
address book on it is v.4.0.6

on new macmini OS-X v10.6.2 with address book v5.0.1

When I tried to open address book on back up got message unable to
open this version of ab with this OS.
Opened new ab & tried to import it and also tried ab data files and on
pull down menu it was grayed out.
What is my solution?

Open the old one and choose "Export" from the File menu. Then open the
new one and choose "Import" and navigate to the exported file.

Albeit that I have the old one copied from my backup drive when I try
to open it (either on my new hd or on my backup hd) I am unable to
open it.
I get the message unable to open this version (i.e. my old Leopard
version) with the current operating system (Snow Leopard).

you have to open the old one with the old system.

or you can try to get the data file from your user Library/Application
Support/Addressbook/AddressBook.data and import that.

As I previously said it will not open
