Do I insert disc before cutting on power or wait until after powered

Frank-

If it has a slot-loading drive, I suggest you insert the CD immediately
after pressing the power button. The drive won't accept the CD until it
has power.

Then immediately hold down the C key to get the iMac to boot from the CD.
