It is obviously a hardware related issue but it has implications for
Linux.

In the question which you failed to include in the body of the message,
which you have repeatedly been told to include when posting a question,
you did not indicate whether you were interested in the hardware or
software implications.

Is your web browswer still broken?

A web search using the appropriate terms reveals that one has to load
different kernel modules for either an ACM modem or a DGC modem.

If you really need a modem to work (and work reliably) under GNU/Linux
or under other OSs, get a US Robotics Courier V.everything serial modem,
and you will save yourself a lot of hassle.

I bought US Robotics 5610C PCI modem & 5637 USB modem from USA via my
cousin. The price (including shipping) is very very expensive. 5637 is a
ACM modem, and Ubuntu 9.10 has built-in driver.

I just noticed that ZOOM 3095 might work in Ubuntu 9.10 as well, but it
uses DGC driver. ZOOM has local distributor, and ZOOM 3095 is about the
same price as USR 5637.

That's why I asked about the DGC vs ACM thing.

As many have replied "DCG" vs "ACM" Modem MAY have different meaning
depending on context.

and "ACM" = Acoustic/Analog Modem. This is VERY loose meaning. I note
that may hits refer to "USB CDC ACM" and/or Cellphones.

With these caveats, there is a difference. Digital vs Analog.

But the phone line is still the good old phone line. What's this digital
vs analog about then, other than the price of the chip involved?
