Possibly off-topic; not sure these "sunset" editions of Microsoft Money
meet definitions of freeware; I haven't scrutinized the licenses, etc.

I've been a MS Money user for a long time, and stumbled across an article
about these "sunset" editions. These editions are stripped of some
features (online updates etc) that were in previous editions of MS Money,
and they do away with "online activation" for installations.

My edition was Money 2005, so I thought I might get some updated features
by installing this 2010 sunset edition.

From the last link, "Money Plus is no longer available for purchase".
That's why I figured they called it the Sunset editions. Guess
Microsoft gave up trying to compete against Quicken.

The article compares MS Money against Quicken:

http://financialsoft.about.com/od/reviewsfinancesoftware/tp/Quicken_vs_Microsoft_Money.htm

According to the article, a failing of both programs is that they are
adware despite also being payware (well, Money was payware before during
the comparison).

Here's an article at CNet that discusses the Sunset editions of Money:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-20005637-56.html

I remember having a copy of Quicken somewhere around a decade ago.
Played with it but never bothered to use it much and eventually in some
new install of Windows it didn't survive a reinstall. I don't think
it's even on my shelves anymore collecting dust. I also remember having
a copy of MS Money back then but abandoned it pretty quick in favor of
Quicken (which infatuated me with the glitz aspects but never kept that
appeal and I didn't bother using it). I do recall Quicken and MS Money
would connect to my bank, download my account transactions, and update
itself (I recall that one actually worked more reliably than the other
but don't remember for which one and that was a long time ago so later
versions might've fixed those problems).

Since this online feature is disabled in the Sunset editions of MS
Money, gee, I certainly don't see any advantage or even a desire to use
it. I have better things to do than manually transcribe my monthly
statement to get it into MS Money or repeatedly connect online to my
bank account to manually detect the new transactions and then manually
input them into MS Money. If you don't have much volume in the way of
number of transactions per month then manual import isn't such a big
issue but then using these programs is not big deal, either. If you
have lots of transactions where downloading them into the financial
software is about the only way it will happen because you can't afford
the time for data entry along with correcting the manual errors then the
lack of download the financial data also means these latest versions
have no value. Having few transactions to manually enter means the
product doesn't have much value. Having lots of transactions but losing
the ability to accurately download them means the product doesn't have
much value. Don't see much point in moving to the Sunset editions.

The CNet article gives tips on why current users of MS Money should NOT
upgrade to this Sunset edition.

And to compete freewares, like Grisbi, that are very good and, well, free.

TY

Bearing in mind I am still using version 3.0 (copyright 1991-1994), I
plan to try it. The feature to load the latest details from the bank
would be useful but the trial tried a few years ago did not link to my
bank in any case.
