Hi,
I'm about to set up a wireless printer made by brother. Iight now it's cat
5ed to desktop pc via usb. Works fine.
Also have laptop wifi'ed via llinksys router for internet access.
I'm about to set up a network between the laptop and the desktop.
Does it make any difference which I do first? Should I network the pcs, and
then do the printer?
Vice versa?
Thanks,
Al

Ah... what? Is it a USB to ethernet adapter?

Since you have a wireless router, I would connect the ethernet cable
from the printer to to the router and access the printer as a network
printer from both computers. In the router configuration, assign a
static IP to the printer. Download the Brother BR Admin software
to assign that IP to the printer.

No, its a wireless printer that has a cat5 port that goes to the
router, and also a USB2 port that goes to the PC. Right now
it's connected to the PC. I'm going to leave it hard wired to the
PC and try to get it to print via WIFI from the laptop. (Win 7 on
the laptop, XP pro sp3 on the PC)

OK

OK, thanks for the help.

Set up a network how? And why, for that matter? If you need the PC to be
able to access the internet then why don't you just network it through
the router, either by wi-fi or cable. And this still allows both
computers to be able to share files, etc.

Or you can install a network printer on XP without any special software
other than the printer driver software. You just have to tell the
install where to look (IP address/network ID) for the printer. The
install will generally tell you what it finds over the network anyway.
It will then install the files locally on the pc, but will print over
the network to the printer.

Yes, that is the plan, network via the router. Sorry I am not writing
explicitly enough. Got derailed so haven't yet got back to this yet, but i
did
find out some amore bout the printer.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me. I learned
that the brother printer can't be set up wifi cabled to the router when the
usb cable is plugged into it. After wifi is functional, holding down the on
button for 15 seconds tells the priter to use both, and at that point you
can
plug the usb cable into it. we'll see. Also, I'm suppossed to set up a
static ip address for the printer, and as yet, have no clue on what that
adddress should be. Still researching.
