Is it possible to add bookmark icons to the bookmarks bar? The icons
appear in "Show all bookmarks" but on the bar itself is just the text of
the names. My wife thinks this looks a little dour...

Not as such, but you can use the OS's Character Viewer to insert any of
the wierd and wonderful Unicode characters into bookmark labels.
They'll be monochrome of course.
