Sorry. :-( That's going to quite a surprise to all the people who print to CUPS servers from Windows. You can either set up a postscript printer under Windows and point it at a "cooked" CUPS queue or you can set up a "raw" queue on CUPS and point Windows to that (with the appropriate printer-driver installed under Windows). Googling for cups, windows, ipp will provide lots of documentation and hints. -- Grant Edwards grante Yow! Here I am in 53 at B.C. and all I want is a visi.com dill pickle!!

I've just fired up a copy of Windows XP and added an "Internet or home/office" printer with a similar URL, http://{servername}:631/printers/pixma. This paused for a few moments and then asked for me to choose an appropriate printer driver. I can get that message if either the server name cannot be resolved, or the protocol ("http") was mistyped. You can reach the server, as named, from the Windows box, can't you...? It might be worth looking in the CUPS access.log (on your server) to see whether the Windows XP box even tried talking to it. > Tried it after turning XP firewall off. Didn't help. The standard firewall shouldn't matter, since you're not trying to talk to the Windows box from your Linux server. If you've got something fancier I would have expected it to ask for confirmation of the outgoing connection to port 631 (which you clearly would have accepted). > Suggestions (that don't involve samba)? Thanks in advance... You don't need SAMBA; what you've tried to do is quite reasonable. Take a look at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71673, starting from the fourth message, "No, I have to correct myself. [...]", which has some suggestions that may be of use. Chris

From the Windows XP box have you checked also 1) ping server_IP 2) ping server_name 3) using the IP instead of the server_name in the URL This may not be the cause of your problem but you should still make sure that it is working.

Ping it fine, using either ip address, or name (I put it in my hosts file on the Windows box). In fact, tried suggestions (1), (2), and (3) - nada. I'm starting to wonder if the XP wizard itself is broken - at least on the machine I'm using. I'll try with another machine, and will report back.

Tried ip number, name, and alias (after putting ip in Windows hosts file) - made no difference.
