From: solboy on 3 Dec 2009 05:55 Hi: I've got a 514 event id with source ESE in my Exchange 2003 Server. I've been reading some information about how to reset transaction log numeric and the procedure I have to do it's simple and easy, but I've got a question: When my exchange database backup finish, in my transaction log folder I can find some log files (just 3 or 4). My question then is: If I reset transaction log numeric moving log files (using eseutil /mh...), am I loosing mails in those logs when resetting numeric??? Those logs will never be inserted in exchange database, then are they lost??? Thanks in advance Eduardo
From: Fabrizio Volpe on 3 Dec 2009 19:08 The logs not deleted during the backup are probably still not committed. If you move them, you risk to lose something if you've to do a recovery from backup. -- Fabrizio Volpe MCSE (NT4) (2000) (2003) - MCSA (2003) - MCTS (SQL 2005) (Exchange 2007) - MCT Fortinet Certified Network Security Administrator (FCNSA)
From: Ed Crowley [MVP] on 3 Dec 2009 21:11 They probably are committed, just not committed to the backed up store. If you had to restore the database from the backup, you would want all logs generated since that backup to avoid a loss of data. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." .. Not if the database is in a clean state. If the database is "dirty" the transactions in the log files haven't been completely written to the database. You'll find the state of the database in the output from the eseutil. >Those logs will never be inserted in exchange database, then are they >lost??? You don't want to remove log files unless the ALL the databases in the storage group are in a 'clean' state. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
