Linux is not new to me but non-development apps are. I'm looking for a
program I can use to rip a dvd of a concert and chop it up into the 18 or
so songs on the video. The object is to have a directory of songs I can
play at random when I'm in the mood for them.

It doen't have to be in linus, but I'm ok with it and I get millions of
responses in Google trying to sell me stuff.

Suggestions?

It depends how the DVD is setup... is it one big film or has it been cut
into chapters in the menu?

DVD::RIP can do it if it's in chapters, otherwise you may need to use more
than one program, one to rip and one to chop it into bits.

For ripping, I suggest HandBrake:

http://handbrake.fr/

You might need another program to edit the file.

Try Handbrake from http://handbrake.fr/. It is one of the better DVD-
to-AVI/MPEG, etc. It may not automatically rip each DVD chapter into a
single .AVI, but you can definitely do it by manually selecting a
chapter at a time.

Good luck--

I've had success with transcode - take a look at:
