Hi
You should be able to use the DE display tool to turn on the second
display? For Nvidia you need to blacklist the nouveau driver and the
install the nvidia driver and I guess use the nvidia xconfig tool or I
have run the nvidia-settings tool with gnomesu to create an xorg.conf
file.

(D)esktop (E) nvironment, xrandr should identify the screens. As a
Gnomer I use gnome-display-properties.

The Aspire is intel, not a 915? My ASUS eeePC 1000HE Netbook 945GM runs
fine with 11.3 and an external monitor.

There's always the old way from console:
xorgconfig
