From: J on 2 Apr 2010 14:57 We bought a server from Dell about 5 years ago. It came with SBS 2003 and 5 licenses. Since then, we have purchased 10 more licenses from Microsoft. I can see those in license manager. If we get a new server, am I correct in that the original 5 licenses die with the old server? But, I can transfer the other 10 from the old server to the new? Do I need the paperwork for the 10 purchased from MS, or can I just backup the license from the old server and import to the new? TIA

From: Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] on 2 Apr 2010 15:58 If the SBS 2003 license was purchased as OEM, yes the first 5 CALs (as well as the SBS server license) are history. As for the remaining CALs, see link below. Unless you have a source for SBS 2003, you're also going to have to buy SBS 2008 and downgrade the server license (and purchase the installation software, probably directly from Microsoft). Since SBS 2003 is pretty long in the tooth, you may want to consider purchasing SBS 2008 rather than SBS 2003. You would need to buy SBS 2008 CALs also. If necessary, you could downgrade the SBS 2008 server license to SBS 2003 along with the CALs. Make sure size your new server for SBS 2008. The hardware will need to be 64-bit (and you might want multiple processors), and you'll need significantly more RAM than the default 4GB that SBS 2008 specs. I'd say go with 8-12 GB so that when you're ready, you can move to SBS 2008. Also, SBS 2008 premium gives you an extra server license, so you could install SBS 2008 on the new server and then re-purpose your old server as a Terminal server or SQL server(assuming its up to the challenge). Lots of things to consider here. .. Migrating Windows Small Business Server 2003 to New Hardware http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc747454(WS.10).aspx ------------------------------------------------------ Transfer client access licenses to the destination server If you purchased additional CALs, you must transfer them from the source server to the destination server. Before you transfer CALs to the destination server, you must activate Windows SBS 2003 for the destination server, and because you are transferring licenses you must use the telephone method of activation. To activate Windows Small Business Server 2003 1.On the destination server, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Activate Windows. 2.In Windows Product Activation, select Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows. 3.After you select the appropriate location, you are provided with a telephone number and an installation ID that you can give to the customer service representative to complete the activation process. After you activate Windows SBS 2003 on the destination server, you can transfer the CALs. To transfer the CALs 1.On the destination server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Licensing. Details about your currently installed CALs appear in the details pane. 2.In the details pane, click Transfer Licenses to open the Transfer Licenses Wizard, and then follow the wizard instructions. 3.After completing the wizard, refresh the Licensing console to verify the successful transfer of your CALs. For more information about transferring CALs, see "Compilation of Activation and Client Access Licensing Help" at the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=46577). ------------------------------------------------------ "J" <japhyrider2005(a)yahoo.com> wrote in message news:ab9b4833-eda4-4861-9853-5e8ce446cd2b(a)g10g2000yqh.googlegroups.com... > We bought a server from Dell about 5 years ago.
