From: ric on 12 Mar 2010 19:17 Windows XP home, dial-up service, cannot get kb792696 to install. I get error code 0x8050855C. I cannot find this code doing a search. MS support is worthless so am asking for help here. Ran Malicious Software Removal Tool, found nothing. I use MS Security Essentials, have one red icon showing no protection, another green showing full protection. What????????? -- surveyor
From: PA Bear [MS MVP] on 12 Mar 2010 19:48 Double-check that KB number & error code, please. Is this a sudden, new problem? Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 ric wrote: > Windows XP home, dial-up service, cannot get kb792696 to install. From: MowGreen on 12 Mar 2010 21:10 Was the previous antivirus uninstalled before MSE was installed ? What was the previous security antivirfus/security suite ? Can you download and install the latest definitions for MSE from here ? http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/HowToMSE.aspx#MSE32bit Under Step 1, click the " download the latest definition updates " and save them. Once the download completes run the downloaded defs, mpam-fe.exe Be aware that the download is approximately 46 MB before clicking that link !
