Hello,
Does anybody know if is possible to install solaris 10 from a remote
site. I mean do a minimal installation from cd media onsite, and then
make the big installation/configuration via ssh access?
The way gentoo does its minimal installation...

If there is a similar approach please comment it..
Thanks..

You can install CD 1 and then after reboot you have the option if
selecting remote media for the rest. I used an install server built
from the Solaris 10 update5 CD. This does require NFS access.

Hmm,

Is this because you don't want to remain onsite to swap CD's?
Does it have a DVD drive?

If so you can just configure the console port and leave the DVD in the
drive. Then its just a case of logging onto the console and doing a
local install.
If its a new Sun server they generally come with a copy of Solaris pre-
installed (although we just install over it normally).

Another option if you have multiple disk drives, is to copy the CD's
(install media) onto a second disk. Then just boot off CD and point
to local media.

I use a Jumpstart server and do a WANboot off CD1. This requires the
Jumpstart server to be running a webserver.

basically i'm responsible for the installation of that solaris, but
the server (a dell one) is on a remote site.
and the person who is onsite only can collaborate with a minimal of
instructions to make the box running and accesible.
(for example input basic data -hostname, ip address, default gw- but
not to select which disc, which file system layout, slices, etc. and
wait to switch all the CDs.

two more questions..
Is a requirement to download the 5 cds or 1 dvd?
Is it possible to only boot with 1 cd, and then complete the
installation from internet? (nor nfs, neither jumpstart server)

thanks for your replies..

Then you are out of luck with the CD1 idea, for Update 5 the disk has to
be sliced manually. If you were to install Update 6 and select ZFS
boot, the process would be manageable by an untrained helper.

Either will do if you want a remote install server.

No, CD1 installs core Solaris. If you can set up remote access to a
terminal server, you can communicate with the installer via the serial port.

Does the box have a service processor? You can easily perform remote
installs to Sun or HP boxes through their service (IOLM) processors.
