From: Jack B on 24 Mar 2010 11:13 I discover that three new folders have appeared on my C drive. I think they appeared after the power went out here. They are: Found.000 Found.001 Found.002 There are a number of FILE....CHK files in them. I assume they're do to the pc recovery check after the power went out. Do I need to keep these folders/files? They are reconstructions of damaged files gathered during a checkdisk operation where the complete file could not be reconstructed.
From: Tom Willett on 24 Mar 2010 12:01 These folders are created automatically when we run the chkdsk scan or possibly another disk checking utility. When errors are found such as lost clusters on your drive, Windows will fix the errors but depending on whether or not you have chosen to convert lost clusters or chains to file, windows will create these folders sequentially starting with .000. So you may have several of them. The folders contain files with names File0000.chk, File 0001.chk and so on. These file are created to save any lost data during the chkdsk fix. But usually these files are of no use and you can delete them at your will. Windows sensed that the process had not completed successfully and ran the disk check utility CHKDSK at the next bootup, and it found possibly corrupt files. The CHK files are files or file fragments that were not properly cataloged in the file system. There is no way to easily tell if they are necessary or not except to examine them with a binary file viewer. You might find that they are some of your data files, and if you rename them with the correct extension, they will be usable again. The files are sometimes corrupt and mashed-up with other unrelated files, and therefore are not usable. Usually, the fragments aren't needed. You might consider keeping them for a while until you are sure the system is running properly and all your data files are present and accounted for. Then you can delete the Found folders and their contents.
