From: Mike on 24 Mar 2010 10:56 I am curious how people wind up with viruses today, especially those with anti-virus software! I have cleaned a lot of computers up, using the ubcd4win, with great sucess, but I have never had to do this to a computer without any virus protection, whether it be CA, Symantec, Bit Defender, Macafee, probably the only software I haven't seen on any of the computers I've cleaned up is Trend Micro. Does that mean they are better then the rest? What does theirs do that the others don't? I myself have run without any antivirus software for a few months, kind of as a test & have gotten nothing. I have also ran with expired software without incident. Are my web- browsing habits just safer than most? I doubt it. I just wish I had an answer to the question that usually starts 'I have anti-virus software...'. On a lighter note, I did have one person a while back tell me they actually clicked/downloaded a file after his software warned him. His answer started with 'But I have anti-virus software on my computer...'.
From: Unknown on 24 Mar 2010 11:11 Great post. I have been running XP since day one and have never had a virus. I have no malware or virus applications whatsoever. I DO NOT click on unknown items. Do you really think that all malware has a little feature that lets you know when they've latched on to your computer or what? -- C

My input is that your habits are a great factor. I'm retired but my last job for 15 years was connecting (Remote desktop etc) to all sorts of clients all over the North American continent doing support work. I never ran any programs other than Microsoft business apps etc, and never had an issue in all 15 years. Others in the office had all sorts of issues, slowness etc, and we all did the same tasks, just some of us had extra curricular tasks, if you know what I mean. Yes, I run AV software and I've had it detect a few things at home where I "play". But I don't open things I am not pretty sure of. Its just common sense I guess, or at least it is in my mind. And I make image backups just in case. To your question of "is one better", I'm not sure. I just know I hate Norton's. Every PC I have problems with its been with Norton. And not virus, but loading Vista SP2 the other day, I could not till Norton was turned off.
