To be honest I dont really trust 3 at all with the switching. I have been
with Orange PAYG since 1996 and had the same number (SIM) since then. I
know I can trust Orange for voice calls and I know the signals are good
everywhere that I travel. Having been with Ornage that long, you get to
know that the network is reliable and can be trusted. The 3 network is good
but not anywhere near as good as Orange for voice calls. And this switching
issue is a real pain. If their network was as good as Orange, they wouldn't
need to switch to Orange in the first place.

I tend to use the S2 for data only. At home I get an excellent signal
from 3, but I live in between two masts that are both fairly close by.

The S2 switching off is also a real pain, and even more of a pain is the
fact that 3 wont recognise that there is an issue with the S2, but there
obviously is. I have three of them here (they were all purchased around the
same time for family members and they all switch off randomly. A seach of
the net also highlights that many others have the same problem too.

I hope it's not the same sim as then you won't have access to Orange 3g

Covering the country with only 2.1Ghz cells would require a lot more
cells than Orange 2g have

3g to 2g handover can also be a handset problem, some phones aren't as
good at it as they should be

You could spend more money on more up market phones,
like the ones Orange might use.

Have you changed the S2 batteries?
It could be they are all from a batch with bad ones?

Yes same SIM since 1996. What good would Orange 3G be to me at their rip
off data prices? Am I missing a good deal on Orange that I dont know about?
If they did a good data deal (as good as 3, I would never have looked
elsewhere for a good deal) I don't have a contract and dont want one
either. Thats why I chose 3 for data.

Is there any point in changing the Orange SIM for a new one? Any
advantages, seeing as their data rates are so expensive? How would I get a
new one anyway, and keep the same number?

> Covering the country with only 2.1Ghz cells would require a lot more

I appreciate the higher frequencies can be more difficult to saturate and
give good coverage. Good point. Luckily at home I have very strong HSDPA
data access from 3, so I am happy with that.

I agree, but why would 3 introduce a phone like the S2 that is poor at
switching? Seems odd to me that they didn't make sure it could handle the
network switching properly before rolling it out into mass production and
then pusing it as a phone for use on their network.

Recommendations please Steve. I want everything the S2 can do and more.
Including acting as a USB / Bluetooth modem for the PC and all the
applications, MSN, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Googlemail, POP3 email and
ideally a bigger screen.

No not changed the batteries. But it seems hard to believe that the
batteries are at fault, cos when it stays on, it can sometimes stay on for 7
days and nights without a charge. I suspect the switching off is linked to
the switching network issue, cos it happens far more often if I am moving
around different cells (ie, in the car). If the phone is at home it
regularly stays switched on all the time. Then when I go out and take it
with me, the phone switches off randomly. You know what really pee's me off
Steve, is that 3 wont admit there is an issue with the S2 when there
obviously is an issue.

Where can I find replacement batteries for the S2? I would be happy to try
one, in my handset, just to discount or prove it was the battery. Never
been able to find any.

You are missing out on the coverage and capacity of all the Orange 3g cells

That's the difficult bit, an upgrade to an Orange 3g phone would get you
a new 3g Sim.
Porting out and into a new sim seems the only other way, the latest
Orange payg sims are 3g.
Orange are sadly anal about issuing new 3g sims

I don't find it poor at switching, the way they hang on to Skype is amazing
far better than my Nokia 6120c.

Maybe there is a bad batch of S2?

Maybe a bad batch?
3 won't be the first to deny a handset problem
It's not one i've seen and i've had four S2's
