Unless you know that channels 1 or 11 are in use, it would be better to pick 1 or 11, as channel 6 is frequently the default for WiFi base stations where the owners do the minimum setup.

I'm using 8 because there are neighbors on 1, 6, and 11. Or at least there were, before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and iStumbler stopped working.
