Thanks for your detailed help.

Unfortunately, my printer's scanning functions are simply not
supported under 10.6. It's a Laserjet M1522MFP connected via LAN.

I'm hoping some software update will soon add support for this model,
but so far, no go (and quite explicitly - it's on Apple's list of
supported printers - and the print drivers certainly show up - but
scanning is not support on this model).

KeyRemap4MacBook works just fine under 10.6. Might point him at that.

I have one of those. I scan from it using the Image capture app as I
never got HPs crappy software to work. Works fine from Image Capture
though, even from other machines on the LAN.

It's a C31...something or other printer scanner card reader thing.

Never have used it as a printer, it's just a scanner for us.

v 10.6.2
Only problem I have had is with email. Many hours with tech support
of both Apple and Windstream did not solve problem. Even reinstalls
didn't work. Apple finally admitted that it must be a software issue.
This group came closer to helping determine the nature of the problem.
Prob is only with sending email. Determined with your help that it
was with the "handshake" before the actual transmission. This took
over a minute. Once handshake successful the transmission went very
fast. If immediately after successful transmission another mail was
sent there was no problem, but if I delayed sending over a few seconds
handshake problem came up again. Both tech supports tried every
possible combination of email settings.

this has occured on iMac, and two macminis.

As I told the other kind poster who suggested (in very generous
detail), it depends on the specific model.

Here's Apple's support page which lists all the printers
that Snow Leopard supports directly, and whether it's print,
scan, fax, or a combination:

<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669>

You'll find your C31xx is listed with both print and scan.
Unfortunately, my M1522 is listed only with print.

As I said to the original poster who asked about problems
with 10.6, one potential one is the loss of functionality
for certain devices. Printers/scanners are almost certainly
the most common such issue and it's certainly affected me
to the extent that I keep one machine running 10.5 for
the time being. Eventually, I'll either replace the
printer, supplement it with another printer which does
both print and scan (I'm leaning towards this solution,
as my current printer, as great as it is, is a black
and white laser and it'd be nice to have a good color
printer, too - I'm leaning heavily towards a Canon MX860
or MX870. I'm done with HP.), or HP will come out with
a driver update.
