....and that's why I'm not buying. Really past time for them to do 1080P
now, but since the iTunes store doesn't sell 1080P you've got to wonder

Observations on this thread.

Audio over HDMI does work - it may not be 5.1, but it will be stereo.
As for the claim it doesn't do 1080p - well it does as mines set to that !

It will pass the digital audio stream directly over the HDMI and optical
output if you wish i.e. if the source move has 5.1 AAC and you have a
suitable decoder then you can have 5.1 sound over HDMI.

You can set it to 1080p output, however an unmodified AppleTV doesn't
have the raw grunt to properly decode 1080p content and hence Apple
don't offer any from iTunes. You can set it to 1080p and it will
upscale your content, it seems this resolution is achieved by some
clever trickery that prevents apps like XBMC using it though.
