A friend of mine has bough an Apple TV. However, they seem to be not getting
any audio out of it. It's connected to their TV via an HDMI cable.

Are there any known issues with this, or should it 'just work'?

It just works for me, but mine does go via my AV receiver.

This is because hdmi audio is not supported you need to buy a cable that
plugs from your audio out jack to the audio in ports in the back of the TV
usually red and white phono at the end of the cable

Eh? It is so supported. There should be no requirement for additional
cables and the documentation makes it clear that you either use HDMI or
you use component video and audio cables.

Which is one of the reasons Apple ain't getting any of my money for an
Apple TV.

Such a cool concept. Such a rubbish implementation.

I'm thinkin' about using my old 1,1 Pro as an Apple TV. Even then I
have to play stupid games to get digital audio into the HDMI 'receiver'

Why is every single implementation of High Definition TV such a
festering mess?
