It's a bit academic now that O2 have said they're not going to sell the
iPhone 4 on PAYG "yet".

Bummer. I was intending to get a PAYG phone from O2, and that's why I didn't
order one from Apple last Monday. Now the waiting list at the Apple Store is
huge, and O2 won't accept reservations in advance, it looks like I'm not
going to be getting one on Thursday.

What would be the advantage from getting it from o2 rather than apple?

I was waiting to see what the O2 pricing was for contract phones to see if it
was worth while getting a contract.

But it isn't.
