I took the words 'locked to Vodafone' along with the subject to mean OP was wanting to move from Vodafone to Asda without buying a new phone using an Asda SIM card.

Yes I think you have. ASDA understandably sell their SIM only pack for use in their own phones. What they don't tell you is that it will work in any Vodafone locked phone as well as an unlocked handset. -- Graham. %Profound_observation%

Unlocking a Vodafone phone is free if you've been on pay as you go for a year with them. (This doesn't necessarily mean on the SIM that came with the phone either - just don't mention that when talking to CS!) Contact phones can be unlocked free too. Unless it's a Vodafone exclusive handset. Don't think they unlock BB Storms etc.
