From: John on 2 Apr 2010 19:31 A friend who is a net novice, is trying to set up Unison. In the preferences/server he has put < news.btinternet.com > as the Usenet server, but he doesn't know what UserName or Password to put in under Edit Servers. The only name and password he can remember setting up was the one for BT email, this did not work, Unison starts to download groups, but it gives an error. I'm trying to help him over the phone, but I know nothing about setting up BT. Does he have to set up a User/Pass for BT news, if yes, how. Regards John

You yousually don't need a user/pswd for the server of your provider. (taht is, coming 'from inside'. Coming from outside you do need one, supposing your provider does admit outside access, (which some don't) Jan

The sort of thing the help line is for. -- Peter

The sort of thing the help line is for. When BT requests a password it is usually the full user name it needs, including the @btinternet.com. Having said that, although I get into the News server on my BT ADSL connection I haven't made a serious effort to get in while away and using another ISP. -- duncank

I use BT; because I'm going to change ISP as and when I get round to it, and for a few other reasons, I usually use the news.individual.net server. But I'm posting via BT's news server with this post. Anyway, enough of that: the server details I'm using now are as follows. NNTP server: news.btclick.com No password or user name required. And while I'm capable of error, I have just looked those details up in MacSoup's preferences and I'm fairly sure I've not cocked up this time[1]. Rowland. [1] I have a tendency carefully to look up the wrong thing without noticing it's the wrong thing; thus, I [sometimes|rarely|fartoobloodyoften] end up with very precisely accurate and yet totally wrong information. -- Remove the animal for email address: rowland.mcdonnell(a)dog.physics.org Sorry - the spam got to me http://www.mag-uk.org http://www.bmf.co.uk UK biker?
