From: R.W. on 5 May 2010 18:49 I'm using Eudora 7.1.0.9 in sponsored mode on a PC running Windows XP. I own a small business and my website is hosted by a company that is NOT my ISP. Let's call the website "mycompany.com". I have two personalities in Eudora. One fetches mail from my ISP and the other fetches mail from my webhost. The Email Address I use for BOTH Eudora personalities is myname(a)mycompany.com. Eudora flawlessly and reliably fetches mail from BOTH locations with one exception. Bounces. But only bounces that start out from Eudora. If I log onto my webhosts webmail and send a message to an invalid address, it bounces back to my webmail inbox instantly, just like it should. If, however, I send a message to that same invalid address from Eudora, the message never bounces. Well, it probably actually DOES bounce, but so far my webhost techs can't tell me where that bounced message goes. So.... 1) Messages sent (to a bad address) from webmail, bounce back to webmail. 2) Messages sent (to a bad address) from Eudora, must also bounce, but never show up in my webmail inbox for Eudora to fetch. 3) Since ALL outbound mail uses myname(a)mycompany.com as the Email Address, then ALL bounces MUST go to my webhost BEFORE a "decision" can be made about what to do with them. If the above 3 statements are true, then my webhost MUST be doing something to reject / filter / delete a bounced message BEFORE it even has a chance to make it to my webmail inbox. But remember- this ONLY happens with bounced messages that originate from Eudora. One other thing- if I temporarily change the Email Address settings of my Eudora personalities to myname(a)myISPcompany.com, then bounces happen instantly. So, what am I missing here?? Is there some Eudora setting I'm overlooking? I'm open to any and all ideas. Thanks!

Eudora only fetches messages that would be sitting in the INbox ((before any filters in your Webmail affect what you see). I routinely move messages from other parts of Webmail back to the Inbox. Eudora then grabs them.
From: RW on 6 May 2010 01:34 As far as fetching mail goes, Eudora works fine- it will fetch whatever it finds in either my webhost webmail inbox or ISP inbox. The issue here is the actual bounced message. This is what I believe is happening, step by step, to an improperly addressed message sent from both webmail and Eudora. First, from webmail. 1) Compose message in webhost's webmail client 2) Send (goes from webhost server to improperlyaddressedrecipient(a)somedomain.com) 3) Bounce (returns from improperlyaddressedrecipient(a)somedomain.com to webmail inbox) 4) Message lands in inbox 5) Message available to be viewed in webmail and/or fetched by Eudora The above works great. Now look at what happens if that same message originates from Eudora. 1) Compose message in Eudora email client 2) Send (goes from Eudora via ISP server to improperlyaddressedrecipient(a)somedomain.com) 3) Bounce (returns from improperlyaddressedrecipient(a)somedomain.com to webhost webmail inbox) THIS IS KEY! 4) Message does NOT land in inbox WHERE IS IT? IT HAS JUST DISAPPEARED! 5) Message is never available to be viewed in webmail and/or fetched by Eudora Somewhere between the bounce and the webmail inbox the message just vanishes into the aether. Does it even reach the webhost's server? It would seem it does (as evidenced by webmail), so where in the world does it go? From: R.W. on 6 May 2010 16:34 It must be more complicated than this because what you're describing doesn't happen either. Like I said, Eudora works GREAT and fetches mail from both my webmail AND ISP without a hitch. Bounces are simply not being received in EITHER place. Not in my ISP's inbox, nor at my webhost's email inbox. Frankly, I couldn't care less where the bounces go- one way or another Eudora will fetch them. The problem is there are NEVER bounces to fetch! My webhost and ISP are both at a loss to explain what's going on. Either they really have no clue, or maybe they're just not looking hard enough. No. Why should it? A message composed in Eudora with the sender's address myname(a)mycompany.com is handled by the receiving SMTP server (your ISP's, in this case) and delivered to it's destination. If the destination address is faulty, it may either bounce from the destination's mail server to the address set in the From field - which is your webhost's mail server, or to another address set in another header of your message. If you don't see it in your webhost's mail server, it is probably at some address at your ISP's mail server. Is there any other address given in the Eudora settings for that account? If so, check that address. You should analyze your complete headers on a correctly addressed message sent the same way to find this out. Christian -- Christian F.
