they pulled firewire 800 on the first intel macbook pro, brought it
back in a later revision.

usb3 is going to replace firewire anyway.

Are you referring specifically to the logic board failures on some
machines? Mine went but I got a new one under the free replacement
programme and other than that it was a great machine. It was my only
computer for 4 years and when I sold it the new owner got a couple more
years out of it.
