cheetah was 10.0 and snow leopard will be around for a while.

so pick one of the larger capacity hard drives or swap it yourself.
memory is cheaper if you add it yourself too.

2 GB of RAM?! 160 GB hard drive?! What on Earth are you talking about?

You can get a MacBook Pro from Apple with 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard
drive. And if you want to save money, you can buy the base model and
purchase the RAM and a larger/faster hard drive separately and install
them yourself.

Yep. And clicking the button to select a BTO option is just so hard, as
is selecting the other base 13" configuration. :-)

what firewire peripherals do you need? usb hard drives work reasonably
well and if money is an issue, that's a compromise you might need to
make.
