CD labeling software prints best with a square background photo of
either 1417x1417 pixels @300 dpi or 2834x2834 pixels @600dpi.

I've been using light scribe for special CDs, and a Sharpie Permanent
Marker for the rest. Templates are available from most office supply
stores,

But your comment interests me....

White Inkjet printable CDs are far more common here (and cheaper) than
LightScribe and there are many suitable printers. I am using a Canon
iP4500 at the moment, though I have used other Canon models and am
quite happy with them. The Canon comes with Label Print software.

I do have a LightScribe-enabled burner, but have never used it. The
availability of the CDs is almost zero as I would have to travel 65K
and only have one store that I know of. Printable CDs are available at
any supermarket or Post Office here.

Printable CDs come in (at least) white and silver, with and without
fully-printable surfaces (everything except the hole).

There are lots of inkjet printers that have a special carriage for printing
on CDs. Epson has several models.

We routinely print - on an Epson - several hundred CDs a month.

Cannon also makes a cheap thermal printer that will print on any CD. It's
limited, however, to printing only a couple of lines of text.
