Two people have told you you can use smbclient to do what you want,
so go read the documentation on smbclient.

CIFS use to not work with smbclient. But it looks like it does now.
And it looks like the "get" command is what I need.

Isn't CIFS just Microsoft's latest re-branding of the SMB protocol?

Probably. I have had to use "mount -t cifs" for years now. The
day M$ makes something that does not suck, will be the day they
start making vacuum cleaners.
