My recollection is that smbclient did not work with
cifs shares. Don't remember how far back.

I had to switch to cifs to get things to work.

Is a "cifs share" something different than what you get when you
export a drive on a windows machine?

last time I tried it I had to switch to NFS. And FTP.

Smbclient and mount.cifs both were screwed.

But that might have been a Gnome thing.

"cifs share" is what Windows and Samba exports.

Your copy of smbclient must have been broken somehow, because that's
what smbclient has always worked with: Windows and Samba exports.
